Prayer is a privilege that we get to take advantage of because of grace through our faith in Jesus Christ.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of GodEphesians 2:8
When Jesus died on the cross the bible says that:
At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split.Matthew 27:51
The symbolism behind the curtain in the temple being torn down is that once it was, there was no longer anything separating us from God.
In the old testament there are 613 laws listed throughout the first five books of the bible (The Torah), outlining everything the Jewish people at the time had to do to be in proper fellowship with God.
Because of God’s Holiness, if ever a Jewish priest (Israel’s ambassador to God) went to the holy of holies, the inner sanctuary of the tabernacle where the spirit of God rested, they would run the risk of dying:
Aaron must wear it when he ministers. The sound of the bells will be heard when he enters the Holy Place before the LORD and when he comes out, so that he will not die.Exodus 28:35
Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.
Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said: “ ‘Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.’ ” Aaron remained silent.Leviticus 10:1-3
Jesus came to fulfill the law through his life death and resurrection (Matthew 5:17).
For the believer part of that everlasting life includes a robust prayer life.
Prayer simply put is how we talk to God. The value in having an open line of communication with the creator of the universe is that we can be confident that not only does He hear us but that He is moving on our behalves.
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.1 Peter 5:7
God wants to know us intimately and He wants us to know Him intimately. In the same way that we develop relationships with other people by talking to them, we develop our relationship with God by talking to Him.
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Prayer is powerful because the one we pray to is Powerful.
